Knowing the notes on the neck is the difference between repeating shapes and understanding what you are playing. People who know them find an F# chord wherever they need it; people who do not stay tied to the two positions they learned first.
Two footholds do half the work. First: the sixth and first strings carry the same notes, so anything you learn on the thickest one you also know on the thinnest. Second: twelve frets along is the same note an octave up, and the dots on the neck (3, 5, 7, 9, 12) are there precisely so you do not have to count.
Play two minutes a day for a week rather than half an hour once: position memory is built by frequency, not duration. Once the naturals are automatic, switch the sharps on and start over.
An honest benchmark: thirty points in a minute means you know the neck. Below fifteen you are still counting frets — which is normal, everyone starts there.
Questions people ask
Do I need a guitar to play?
No, it works on its own. But with the guitar in your hands it is worth twice as much: play the note as you find it and the memory becomes muscular too.
Why only natural notes at first?
Because they are the landmarks — sharps and flats sit between them. Once you rarely miss, turn the accidentals on and the game is complete.
Is my score stored anywhere?
Only inside your browser, locally. There is no online leaderboard and no data leaves your computer.
Can I play without a mouse?
Yes: Tab moves into the neck, the arrow keys move between strings and frets, Enter or space answers.
